Benefits of laughter

Who does not feel good laughing? But sometimes, due to stress, sadness or some unfortunate event, you will be unable to laugh. For instance, due to a romantic breakup, job loss, death etc.
In that case, laughter therapy may be the best solution, since it can teach you to laugh when you need it. But you can also learn to laugh by yourself.

“In Taoism, the Chinese philosophy of Tao (6th century BC), laughter was considered essential to preserve and have a good quality of life.

Aristotle, as early as the 4th century BC, defined laughter as a ‘valuable exercise for health’ .
Also in medieval times (SV-XV) jesters were introduced in the courts with the function of entertaining and making people laugh.

Sigmund Freud, the famous Austrian physician, neurologist and father of psychoanalysis, affirmed that laughter has the power to release negative energy from our body .

The following are the benefits of laughter

Laughter provides benefits in three parallel universes of the human being, namely:
1. Physical benefits
2. Psychological benefits
3. Social benefits.

1. Physical benefits of laughter

Muscle exercise: when you laugh, you use around 400 muscles in your body, which produces benefits for the spine by moving it and releasing tension.

Oxygenation: the lungs function twice as fast as normal, which is why there is greater oxygenation of the skin, among other tissues.

Soothing effect: when you laugh you secrete different hormones such as endorphins, dopamine, serotonin and adrenaline, which enhance the mood and trigger a natural calming effect.

Strengthens the immune system, increasing the number of antibodies in our body.

2. Psychological benefits of laughter

Reduces stress: thanks to the segregation of endorphins and adrenaline that activate us and make us fight stress in a more awakened way.

It reduces several symptoms related to depression and anxiety, since it makes us be more receptive and see the positive side of things.

It raises the mood, raises the feeling of well-being and self-confidence, laughing we eliminate mental barriers that we put on ourselves to protect ourselves from new situations.

3. Social benefits of laughter

It acts as a union between people without having to have previous personal ties due to its contagious nature.

Moreover, laughter helps to cope with embarrassing situations and to transform an apparently complicated situation into a more bearable one by fighting shyness.

And it improves interpersonal relationships, as it helps to express positive emotions and push back negative ones.

In short, when you laugh, you are giving yourself a simple therapy. Because, It affects your body, mind and relationships.
