January 26, 2021Ayobiojo Mayowa

Anything unpleasant received to any of our five senses can have a dreadful impact on your mental health. If you are going through stress, having health issues, don’t take an interest in anything, and are feeling overwhelmed all the time, then it might be possible you are not taking good care of your senses.

Sight, smell, sound, taste, and touch: These five senses are directly interlinked to your health. If these senses are wisely used and well-maintain by a person, they bring more colors in life, keep health in good shape, and allow us to experience components that can make life so rich.

In contrast, losing the use of senses can bring severe harmful effects on your mental health. Being mindful of your senses is essential to the quality of your life and health.

“All our knowledge begins with the senses, proceeds then to the understanding, and ends with reason. There is nothing higher than reason.”― immanuel kant

Here are some techniques to get in tune with your senses to improve self-care and health:

Give pleasure to your eyes by observing the beautiful nature around you. Go out for a walk and see the beautiful trees, greenery grass, engaging flowers, and huge mountains to bring an unbearable taste to your sight. The longer you look at the beautiful sceneries, the more visual pleasure you will receive. Using your eyes to look at the attractive things can provide a nice distraction when feeling overwhelmed and help you self-soothe.

Hear:

Your hearing sense has a more substantial effect in setting you up for a positive emotional state. Music therapy is now become recommended to alleviate symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression. Listen to nice acoustic and instrumental music to provide patience to your mind and relive your soul. No matter if you are not a fan of music, closing your eyes and listen to the pleasant sound around you can be an insightful and mindful experience.

Smell:

A number of researchers found that aromatherapy has positive benefits for the wellbeing of a person’s mind. It is often recommended for people dealing with anxiety, depression, and issues with sleeping.  There are many ways you can take advantage of soothing scents. Gardening is best for this reason. You can smell and feel the fragrance of flowers around you. In the woody area, you can also inhale the fresh air to brighten up your mood.

Taste:

It is not the best practice to turn to food all the time for comfort. Many of us have learned that hunger can increase the irritability factor, which can impact the anxiety level. Rather than turning to junk food to vanish your appetite, try to consume healthy meals and ingredients. Eat fresh vegetables, fruits, and grains. A healthy diet will keep you fit, refreshes your mind, and brighten up your soul.

Skin:

Your skin is the largest organ of your body, which enables you to feel the sensation of touching. Drink a considerable amount of water to glow up your skin. A relaxing bath refreshes your body and mind. Do exercise and stretches your muscles to keep your body fit and good in shape.  Also, playing outside with your friend or pet can also brighten up your mood.
